If location is the key to success in business, Border Inn gets an epic fail.

Fortunately, what the isolated hotel lacks in convenience it makes up in market share.

We hauled through the heart of Nevada on an overnight trip from Las Vegas to Great Basin National Park, about 300 miles each way.

It's a stunning change of scenery from Las Vegas and nearly a trip through time.

We just returned from a trip to Baker, Nev., and Great Basin National Park via U.S. Route 93, aka, the Great Basin Highway.

It's a must-drive for anyone who wants to get out of Las Vegas. No cellular service, no traffic and stunning sights.

We're still working on the photos we shot, but I'm posting this one as a preview.

Road trip: Great Basin PDF Print E-mail

Elko, the Nevada Outdoor News hound, (and newly appointed editorial assistant) and I will be heading northeast to Great Basin National Park, east of Ely near the border with Utah.

The occasion is a stargazing event hosted by the National Parks Conservation Association.

But we'll do a hike Sunday in the park and check out the renown Border Inn in Baker, Nev., where we'll be staying.

The best parts about central and northern Nevada are the wide open spaces and gorgeous topography. Above is a shot of Highway 318 south of Lund.

Hopefully one of the star nerds at the event can show us how to hold open the shutter on our lowly Canon Powershot A720 so we can start taking cool night sky pictures.

Let's hike Cat rock! Now!! PDF Print E-mail

Nothing fires up Elko the Nevada Outdoor News hound like getting ready for a hike.

Except getting ready to hike someplace called Cat Rock

Sadly, for Elko, Cat Rock is just an abbreviation for Cathedral Rock on Mount Charleston.

No chases on this trip.

But that doesn't make this hike any less fun.
