When the crowds, traffic, lights and bells of Sin City are too much be glad there's Sun City.
The old people town, er, age-restricted community, in the Las Vegas suburb of Summerlin is a great place for recreational golfers to play clean, attractive courses that aren't as brutal trendier tracks we've played such as Laughlin Ranch. |

So in the middle of the Memorial Day weekend the leadership at Nevada Outdoor News decided it was time for an impromptu road trip. The destination? Rhyolite. The objective? To grill dinner, drink beer and watch the sun set. So we loaded the car with High Life, some pork from the carneceria, tortillas, charcoal and lighter fluid.
The plan was to use the grills in the picnic area at the old ghost town site to make dinner. The problem, discovered upon arrival, was there are no grills at Rhyolte, just picnic tables. |

It's easy to think of Nevada as a wasteland. As a kid in Wisconsin I remember my dad telling me it was Las Vegas and a bunch of desert. But as so often happens, the truth on the ground isn't so simple. |

We've been slow to post lately due to a change in location. But now we're securely ensconced in our new Nevada Outdoor News global headquarters in fabulous Las Vegas, Nev. Our first real excursion was an urban hike from headquarters to downtown, about a 40 minute walk. Elko, the Nevada Outdoor News newshound, was in need of a night on the town.

We can't always shave strokes off our golf score, but we just found an awesome way to shave a few bucks off the cost of a round of golf. Elko the Nevada Outdoor Newshound and I recently found a storm drain discharge in a Summerlin wash that spits out about dozen balls per week, give or take. Our first trip to the front of the grate yielded eight decent golf balls, in addition to several shabby ones we left behind. On a return trip Sunday we found 15 well-conditioned golf balls in about five minutes of poking around. Considering how tough the economy is here in Las Vegas, we'll take all the freebies we can get.
