Ah, climate change.

Figment of our imagination scaring us into massive spending that will shackle future generations with crippling debt?

Or too-late-to-escape reality that will doom the children of today to a Dune-like post apocolyptic existence should they be lucky enough to survive to adulthood?

For the sake of our sanity, let's pick answer C: giver of balmy January temperatures.

Here's an article from the Reno Gazette-Journal that, after trudging through a few paragraphs about planetary doom and water shortages, reminds readers to at least take advantage of an opportunity to ski on the dirt in short sleeves.

A friend at work shared this awesome bike route planner her son made.

It's for San Francisco, but it is so cool I thought perhaps it might be inspiration for some entrepreneurial, tech savvy biker to do something similar in Las Vegas.

I don't know how he did it nor do I know much geographic detail about San Francisco so I can't tell you how effective it is.

But there must be some Las Vegans out there who are qualified to put this thing through its paces and say whether something similar would work here.

Enjoy.

Here's a story from the Review-Journal about the new owners of the Resort on Mount Charleston, nee, Mount Charleston Hotel.

The owners of the Gold Spike and Siegel Suite residential properties took over the hotel.

Their plans include some renovation and, with luck, they'll have the property living up to its potential.

As anyone who spends a lot of time on the hill knows, better food, lodging and entertainment options would be welcome.

These two stories from the National Park Service show what can happen when things go wrong outdoors.

In one, two men from Pahrump were killed in Lake Mohave in Lake Mead National Recreation area.

The men left Cottonwood Cove in a 12-foot aluminum boat and were apparently swamped by waves.

In the other story two Minnesota men were saved from the frozen Colorado wilderness thanks to some quick thumbwork and fortunate access to cellular phonesignals.

The men took snowmobiles into Rocky Mountain National Park and became stranded. They started a fire to keep warm and, in the morning, sent text messages to friends. Officials used the signals to pinpoint the men's location.

They were in the Never Summer Wilderness Area, so it's a good bet they were dressed for cold weather.

Went on a fantastic hike to Turtlehead Peak this weekend, in Red Rock National Conservation area.

Not only was the weather perfect for hiking, it was a great group of people and we even had a Turtlehead virgin on the trip!

Here's a shot of expert hiker Dave brimming with confidence before his assault on the summit!

Check out a further description of Turtlehead and some more pix here.
